The Project
Spotswood is a small neighbourhood pocket in Melbourne’s inner west that contains the area’s local shopping strip ‘village’ and has great potential but requires activation and public realm improvements that could affect a greater sense of place and experience of the suburb.
Hudsons Road currently presents as a street mainly for cars with linear geometry, lack of pedestrian crossings and footpath space. There are a few canopied green spaces and outdoor seating areas with no discernible entry landmarks to its village spine.
A Streetscape Masterplan will guide the design of Hudsons Road as it undergoes a period of transition along with high density residential developments and will prioritise the quality of public spaces to ultimately support local businesses and outdoor trading and serve the community’s needs.
A study of the existing character and context and resulting concept plan will steer future infrastructure and capital works projects to enhance safety, amenity, drainage, and presentation of the street. Improvements to urban elements such as green spaces, street furniture, footpaths, and inclusion of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) principles will add appeal to the area.
Our Work
Having worked on the Spotswood Streets for People initiative for Hobsons Bay City Council, Ratio is familiar with the guiding principles and objectives for this area in transition, as well as prior research from previous community consultations.
Our Urban Design team have therefore been able to apply insightful expertise and good practice urban design and landscape architecture to prioritise the quality of public spaces and urban improvements, to redirect primary transport mode away from private vehicles, increase pedestrian amenity and enhance the village presentation.
Our transport team provided specialist transport input and design review of the concept master plan alongside Ratio’s Urban Design team, Spiire and Hobsons Bay City Council, progressing our works on the Spotswood Streets for People project.
