At Ratio, our approach is built around the core belief that collaboration leads to better outcomes. Bringing multiple disciplines together early in the project lifecycle can help deliver solutions that are more efficient, creative, and responsive to your needs. By engaging internal teams at the earliest stages, we work to develop technically sound solutions that align with your goals and meet relevant industry standards. This approach can help reduce turnaround times, avoid conflicting advice, and provide you with greater confidence throughout the application process.
Our multidisciplinary team – including planners, transport engineers, waste management consultants, urban designers, landscape architects and civil engineers – is frequently engaged as a collective, consulting on projects that are vital to the success of our future infrastructure.
Below, we showcase several projects demonstrating how our integrated approach delivers success.
Our recent involvement in an eight-storey student accommodation building in Malvern East, designed by Telha Clarke Architects, exemplifies how a multidisciplinary approach can drive efficiency, responsiveness, and project success.
Working closely with the client, our team provided comprehensive services encompassing urban planning, landscape architecture, traffic engineering, and waste management. The project recently received planning permit approval following key refinements – particularly from architectural, landscape and traffic perspectives – made in a rapid turnaround enabled by our integrated team approach and internal collaboration. Every piece of advice and documentation was delivered to the client, stakeholders, and Council was carefully reviewed through a multidisciplinary lens to ensure a strong application.

The Isle of Wight Hotel will restore an iconic hotel and hospitality destination to the shores of Port Phillip. Ratio provided planning, traffic, urban design, and waste management services for the project.
Our urban design advice, which established initial key built form parameters, was informed by traffic advice and insight from our transport team on best access points to the site and minimum car parking requirements. Meanwhile, our planning team addressed key considerations in line with local legislation, and our waste management team developed tailored waste management and optimisation strategies for the development.
This collaborative approach ensured that our urban design recommendations were informed by multiple perspectives. The development opportunities and key parameters were presented in a comprehensive report featuring 2D and 3D graphics, which the architects used to inform the final design and documentation.

Hudsons Road is a central thoroughfare in Spotswood, serving a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial uses. Ratio contributed to the design of a new Streetscape Masterplan with urban design, landscape architecture, and transport planning services.
Working with our transport team and drawing on the local knowledge gained through their work on ‘Spotswood Streets for People’, our urban design and landscape architecture teams prioritised the quality of public spaces on Hudsons Road. Together, they shifted the focus away from private vehicles and towards improved pedestrian and cycling access. These strategies enhance local character and support outdoor trading to activate the precinct.
Through a multidisciplinary approach, we delivered a clear and coordinated vision that responds to community needs and supports future growth.
