Supporting the South Coast’s Next Wave of Growth in NSW

The South Coast of NSW is entering a major growth phase, from Shellharbour to Port Kembla and Warrawong, with new housing, jobs and infrastructure reshaping the region.

Supporting the South Coast’s Next Wave of Growth in NSW

At Ratio, we’re proud to be supporting this transformation through smart, place-based traffic engineering that balances growth, movement and liveability.

Recent rezonings highlight the scale of change ahead:

  • Shellharbour – Up to 5,000 new homes, including social and affordable housing.
  • Port Kembla – A 200-hectare industrial rezoning at the steelworks site, targeting 19,000 jobs in advanced manufacturing and renewables.
  • Warrawong – 1,300 homes and a new mixed-use precinct integrated with upgraded public transport links.

These projects promise opportunity but also demand careful traffic and transport planning to keep people, goods and services moving safely and efficiently.

Our work across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven shows that early, evidence-based traffic engineering is key to:

  • Integrating new precincts into existing networks.
  • Ensuring infrastructure upgrades are efficiently planned and timed.
  • Balancing transport modes across cars, buses, cycling and walking.
  • Planning for the future (not just today’s traffic) counts.

We’ve delivered transport strategies, design advice, access and due diligence assessments, and prepared development applications for projects across the South Coast, helping unlock growth while preserving liveability.

Our recent portfolio includes veterinary surgeries, gymnasiums, childcare centres and industrial warehousing across Wollongong City Council, as well as medical centres and childcare facilities across Shoalhaven City Council.

As the South Coast accelerates, developers and councils alike need traffic solutions that are local, sustainable and future-ready.

If you’re planning a new precinct or preparing applications for new uses on existing lots in the region, our team’s experience can help move your project forward.

Please reach out to Peter Malley or Hannah Alsop if you would like to discuss any projects or sites in the NSW South Coast.
