Western Grassland Reserve

The Victorian Government acquired 15,000 hectares to preserve and protect native grasslands, flora, and fauna.

The acquisition of the Western Grasslands aims to preserve endangered species under the Australian Government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

The Project

To protect one of the largest, contiguous sections of remaining volcanic grassland in western Victoria, the Victorian Government is acquiring 15,000 hectares of private land, mostly used for agricultural purposes, to establish the Western Grassland Reserve.

This irreplaceable grassland ecosystem is classified as critically endangered and is covered by a Public Acquisition Overlay, which means the Victorian Government is committed to purchasing many privately owned properties and establishing the reserve in full to preserve native grasslands, flowers, and animals.
