Originally designed for the 2026 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, We the Wild has now found a permanent home on the Docklands Waterfront at Yanunong Quay.

The award-winning garden explores how compact urban landscapes can foster biodiversity, support pollination, contribute to urban cooling and create more meaningful connections with nature. Drawing inspiration from Victoria’s southern coastline, the garden brings native planting and nature-led design into the heart of the city.

The project

Initially conceived as a temporary installation, We the Wild has been reimagined as a lasting public landscape for Docklands Waterfront. Sponsored by Development Victoria and the City of Melbourne, the project repurposes plant stock and materials from the original show garden into a permanent contribution to the public realm.

Our work

Ratio led the delivery of the garden from concept through to installation, working collaboratively with To Good Use and Studio Perspective to adapt the original show garden into a permanent public outcome.

Our landscape architecture team designed a nature-led urban space that balances biodiversity, functionality and public experience within a compact footprint. The project demonstrates how carefully considered landscape interventions can contribute to greener, more connected and more liveable urban environments.

Plant supply was led by Kuranga Native Nursery and Proven Winners, supporting a predominantly Australian native planting palette selected to encourage pollination. The project reflects a growing focus on nature-based urban design and the role landscape architecture can play in shaping healthier and more engaging public spaces.
