The heritage-significant Sorrento Athenaeum is a building with 120 years of history.

Our team was excited to be part of the adaptive reuse of the former Athenaeum theatre in Sorrento.

The Project

This landmark heritage building at 30-34 Ocean Beach Road is included on the Victorian Heritage Register.

Designed by Tandem Design Studio, the proposal sought to adaptively re-use the former theatre period building and adjoining non-period building as retail tenancies.

In addition to revealing historic elements of the upper façade of the former Theatre, the modifications to the ground level had to carefully interpret and respect the layers of historic evolution to the fabric that had occurred over 120 years, whilst providing a modern and enticing retail presentation.

Our Work

Ratio were pleased to be part of the project team that successfully obtained approval for the redevelopment of the former Athenaeum Theatre in Sorrento.

The project team worked closely with the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council officers to balance the views of Council’s internal heritage advice with that of Heritage Victoria, to successfully obtain a planning permit for the project.
