The Event
Moomba Festival is held annually over the Labour Day long weekend, which fell on Thursday 09 March to Monday 13 March 2023. Moomba comprises various key events within the Melbourne CBD over five days, with event locations primarily centred around the Yarra River, including the Moomba Carnival, Birdman Rally, Moomba Fireworks and Moomba Parade.
Our Work
Our transport team prepared a Transport Management Plan (the Plan) which specifies the various transport requirements and operational information for the duration of Moomba Festival.
The Plan incorporated traffic and crowd management measures for each day of the event, with additional provisions set in place for the Moomba Fireworks and Moomba Parade.
The Plan also outlined a number of inclusions for public safety and event management including road closures to ensure more pedestrian-friendly areas for people, bicycle treatments, towaway zones, traffic detours for vehicles and variable message signs to provide advanced warning signage of road closures throughout the event. Around the road closures, public transport for both event patrons and the general community was allowed to operate without impact to services.
