Tatu City - Central Plaza

Central Plaza integrates Kikuyu cultural heritage with native plant diversity to create a landmark public space for Tatu City, Kenya’s first master-planned city.

With no local precedents, our landscape architecture team engaged with the Kikuyu tribe, developing a concept design that authentically reflects local culture and celebrates native species.

The project

Central Plaza serves as the focal point of Tatu City’s central district in Kenya. Located on a 5,000-acre master-planned development north of Nairobi being built for 250,000 residents, the plaza had no existing local precedents, creating an opportunity to establish a new benchmark for public space design in East Africa.

The design celebrates Kenya’s native plant diversity while honouring the cultural heritage of the local Kikuyu tribe. A dedicated coffee garden preserves the site’s history as a coffee plantation, connecting to Tatu City’s broader strategy of maintaining coffee cultivation as both an industry driver and tourist attraction.

Our work

Our landscape architecture team developed the concept design for Central Plaza, drawing on world-class public space precedents to inform our approach.

We engaged with the local Kikuyu tribe to incorporate their stories and cultural heritage throughout the plaza design, ensuring the space authentically reflects the local community and honours traditional connections to the land.

Our design approach embodies a botanic garden, with the plaza organised into distinct zones that showcase Kenya’s native plant species. The coffee garden integrates existing coffee trees into the design, preserving the site’s plantation heritage and allowing visitors to experience the journey from cultivation to tasting.

The concept design celebrates Kenya’s natural and cultural heritage within this new public space for a city being developed for 250,000 residents.
