The Development
The project developed an existing primary school campus in a constrained inner-city location. The school’s new façade reflects features of the surrounding heritage buildings while, internally, the new layout passively interacts with central parts of the ground level school campus.
New classrooms, open-air learning spaces and performing arts facilities will provide students with an interactive learning environment while a competition-size basketball court caters both to students and community groups.
The design response provides a welcoming pedestrian entrance from Bank Street and new landscaping along the frontage.
Our Work
Ratio’s planning team was engaged to consult on the development at the pre-application stage to liaise with Council and State government stakeholders. Our team also worked closely with architects ClarkeHopkinsClarke, Catholic Education Melbourne and school stakeholders to deliver an approval that met the future needs of the Galilee community.
The site’s heritage and existing interfaces required careful consideration to receive an approval that met project timeframes and allowed for the demolition of existing buildings to commence during the school’s summer holidays.
Our planners liaised with heritage, landscape and arborist experts to prepare important components of the development which included a Heritage Interpretation Strategy to ensure the integrity of the previous building is preserved long into the future.
