Ratio’s Urban Design team is managing the Master Plan process for the heritage site.

Caught in the tension between rich history and future prosperity, Walhalla is a ‘living town’ set in beautiful historical surroundings that risks becoming a museum piece.

The Project

Located within Baw Baw Shire two hours East of Melbourne, the mining town of Walhalla has under thirty permanent residents but welcomes close to 130,000 visitors annually (pre-COVID). Walhalla has 75 places listed on the Victorian Heritage Database. Its heritage importance cannot be overstated.

The town requires a Master Plan to ensure cohesive, achievable, and best-practice development outcomes to meet tourism aspirations that take into account its historical heart.

Our Work

Ratio’s Urban Design team have embarked on large-scale community, stakeholder, and Council engagement. Community cohesion and buy-in will be crucial for the successful implementation of the plan.

Once a vision is established, Ratio’s Urban Design, Planning and Traffic departments will pitch in to help turn the vision into a planned reality.

A key challenge is the lack of existing infrastructure including reticulated water or sewerage services. Our team anticipates this to be a priority for the community and tourism investments.

Throughout the next stage of the project, our Urban Design team will continue to collaborate with an Advisory Group consisting of Richard Ponsford (Origin Consultants), Lauren Murphy (Warragul-based photographer), and Si Billam (Traralgon-based graphic designer), utilising their specialist local expertise to produce the Master Plan document.
