The Melbourne Indigenous Transition School (MITS) has worked with Ratio Consultants to receive planning permission from the Yarra City Council to begin construction on the MITS Alumni Boarding House for Boys.

Engaged as consultants on the project in mid-2020, Ratio planners worked closely with MITS and McIldowie Partners to articulate the merits of the project.

MITS Alumni Boarding House for Boys

Following the injection of $10 million funding from the Morrison-McCormack Government, MITS has secured a 40-year lease on the Richmond Hill site which is situated a short distance from its sister building, the MITS Alumni Boarding House for Girls, established in 2020.

The new 40-bed residential boarding house will generate more future-facing opportunities for the indigenous students travelling to Wurundjeri Country from remote and regional areas in Victoria and the Northern Territory, providing students in years 8 to 12 with a culturally connected home base from which they can commute to schools in surrounding locales.

Planning Application

The application to exceed mandatory building height required careful consideration of amenity impacts to surrounding dwellings, heritage sensitivities, protection of large street trees and landscaping to give the site a home-like feel.

Looking Forward

Ratio is thankful for its strong partnership with the Yarra City Council Planning Department and eagerly anticipate the planned construction of the Alumni Boarding House for Boys which is slated to open its doors in 2022.
